The Missing Piece: Why Your Home Still Doesn't Feel Quite Right

Published on 17 June 2026 at 10:59

Do you ever just stop and take in your ‘familiar surroundings’ from a different perspective?  Often we are so used to doing a task in a particular way or looking at a room layout as a static situation – We sit facing this way because the TV is there,  we’ve always just switched on the ceiling lights and that was adequate, that vase goes there because it fits ok on that shelf….

A functional home is fine, but a curated, thoughtfully designed home becomes an extension of who we are, where we are at and what we stand for…. AND it’s not hard to achieve if you know some of the tricks, nor does it need to be expensive.

My approach to creating a home that feels warm, welcoming, intentional & interesting is to find out about you…..

– what do you love? how do you like to feel? what’s important to you and what works? – and what doesn’t?!

A home should tell a story – YOUR STORY, and to do that, it needs personality, flavour and lots of love.

Yes, there are fundamental ‘design’ elements, rules & ideals but there is also experimentation, taking risks, being flexible and thinking creatively, looking at your home differently – with care & consideration for how it can best reflect you and your family.

Here are a few issues I see frequently, and once these are addressed, can bring life, balance and a curated feel to any space.

Missing Layers

Missing layers doesn't mean adding more "stuff" or draping throws over every available surface. It means introducing texture, pattern, height, colour and personality in thoughtful proportions.

Layers are what make a house feel like a home. They're the textures, lighting, textiles and personal touches that add warmth, character and depth to a space. Without layers, a room can feel unfinished. With them, it feels welcoming, comfortable and uniquely yours.

Poor Lighting

No, lighting is not just about flipping a switch on the wall so we can see in the dark!  Great lighting is defined by several varied light sources.

Beautiful rooms rarely rely on a single ceiling light. The most inviting spaces combine ambient lighting for overall illumination, task lighting for practical activities, accent lighting to highlight features, and mood lighting to create warmth and atmosphere. It's this layering of light that transforms a room from simply functional to truly memorable.

Scale Issues

A trained eye can see this well.  Sometimes things just don’t feel comfortable, even when individual pieces are nice, the room feels ‘off’

Scale & Proportion go hand in hand, and usually it is the blend of scale (used correctly) that makes a room feel balanced & interesting.

Common mistakes include artwork & rugs that are too small, Furniture that is either too small or too bulky, lighting that is the wrong size for it’ location.

Scale is about getting the size of things right. When furniture, rugs, artwork and lighting are appropriately sized for both the room and each other, a space feels balanced and comfortable. When scale is off, even beautiful pieces can feel awkward or disconnected.

Lack of Personality

A very young tradie working on my house once, made a comment that has stuck with me – he told me that he loved my interior, it was unique & original and he could ‘feel’ the story of our family.   (And no, it wasn’t all family photos and portraits)

To me that was a real compliment, and a reminder that I am good at collecting little snippets of ‘storyline’ that make my home feel real, honest & made for us!

Gather your favourite memories, and more so, tap into who you are, what you love and what makes you interesting, then weave stories of yourself into your home through décor, colour, style and intent.

Too Matchy

This is my pet hate!  No home needs to feel like a furniture catalogue.  Please do NOT match your entire bedroom suite like it’s the 80’s.  Yes, I get it – it feels like the safe option, but it will fall flat every time.

I’m big on finding unique pieces that work, mixing old with new, experimenting with different pieces to find that tension, that sweet spot when 2 things come together and ‘sing’

Mixing is where the magic happens - The most beautiful homes aren't perfectly matched—they're thoughtfully layered. A mix of old and new, polished and textured, treasured and practical pieces creates a home that feels collected, comfortable and uniquely yours.

The challenge is that we live in our homes every day. We become accustomed to what's there, what's missing and what no longer works. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective to uncover the potential hiding in plain sight."

If your home feels almost right, but not quite, perhaps one of these missing pieces is holding it back. Sometimes a few thoughtful changes can completely transform the way a space feels. If you'd like another set of eyes, some practical guidance or help pulling everything together, I'd love to help you uncover your home's potential and create a space that truly feels like you.
